Introduction of the Company:
As concern over food security and climate change increases around the world, people are adopting new technologies for localizing and securing food supply. Urban Farming is fast becoming a global trend, with counties like Netherlands and Singapore at the forefront of these advancements. The idea is to bring food production closer to the consumers’ doorstep to reduce the substantial “foodprint” created by traditional farming.
Creating a food supply in the middle of a metropolis however presents its own challenges in terms of lack of fertile land and space restrictions. Urban farming uses Hydroponics technology to allow for soil-less growing; along with techniques such as “vertical farming” to address space issues. Not only does Hydroponics technology allow farmers to grow without the need for soil, it also dramatically increases the output as compared to soil farming: up to 20 times for some crops. Hydroponics technology also recycles water and saves up to 95% of water as compared to traditional farming. Along with water conservation, hydroponics technology also uses up to 95% less fertilizers and can eliminate pesticide and chemical uses altogether.
Our company, OneSquareMeter Founded by Humera Waheed and Co-Owner Shah Firaz Thebo, started off with the idea to promote Urban Farming in Pakistan. Cultivation areas in cities aren’t in abundance, and instead of talking in acres or hectares, the idea of farming is confined to a smaller area, perhaps in meters. Here lies the story to our name: the idea that you can start growing your own food and herbs from just One Square Meter. Our mission is to bring you the best of technologies available today, along with local farming experience to help you create your own food supply.
